it's all about him

(... so don't bother with this entry if you're not interested.)

Yesterday's prac class presented me with a wide array of mammalian skulls and skeletons.
Trying to identify every single one of them was a challenge... a very interesting one.
But there was just way too many things to go through in one prac session and I felt my head become heavy with the overload of information.
What was supposed to be a very exciting prac became one that's long and draggy and it totally wore me out.

BUT after the prac, i received a sms from the boyfriend that made me laugh so hard that it got my friend curious as to what the sms was about.

here's what it says:
"hey babe, just thought id let you know i fell down pretty badly last night and got quite abit of grazes. Dont worry Ive seen e doctor already and im ok =)"

My friend stared at me, shocked as to why i was laughing so hard and she kept asking if he was alright. She appeared rather worried. Me? I was still laughing away. Oh boy... i'm sucha sadistic girlfriend.

Truth is... i know my boyfriend way too well. It's absolutely normal for him to fall down and hurt himself. He just wouldn't be Eric if he didn't. So I've learnt to laugh at it instead of being all worried about him. It's apparently one of the more serious bruising he's got in long time though. He fell off the skateboard in the middle of the road and landed face down. So he hurt his knee, both hands and even bruised his chin and cheek. And i've made fun of every single bruise he's got. HA HA!!!

That boyfriend of mine, he's just like a little kid. It amuses me.

Nasty things happen.

They happen when you least expect them to in the most horrible way possible. They take you down from behind. It happens so swiftly you don't know how to react.

Like being smacked in the head with a thick book consisting of a compilation of fairytales. It doesn't matter that in it are fairytales that end happily ever after. It still hurts.

What do you do?

Turn around and slap the person who did it? What if standing there before you was a person you love and respect? One whom you never expect to do something so impossibly mean. Someone whom you turn to for protection, the pillar of strength, the blanket of comfort, the figure you look up to.

It's no longer just the pain of being hit but also the disappointment of being crushed.

That pillar crumbles to your feet.

Lost. I know not what to do. I know not how to face the one person I never thought I'd have a problem facing.

got a problem with slit-eyes?

A star member of Spain's Beijing Olympic basketball team, Toronto Raptors guard Jose Calderon, has defended a controversial advertisement where the entire squad posed while making slit-eyed gestures, saying it was an "affectionate gesture."

"What happened was that during a photo session where the Spanish national team was unveiled, one of our sponsors asked us to pose with a 'wink' to our participation in Beijing and we made an oriental expression with our eyes," he wrote on his Internet site.

"It seemed to us to be something appropriate and that it would always be interpreted as an affectionate gesture. However some European media did not see it as such," he added.

"I want to express that we have great respect for the Orient and its people, some of my best friends in Toronto are of Chinese origin."

'Insensitive'

In the ad for a Spanish courier company which appeared in sports daily Marca -- which has been widely circulated on the Internet -- the smiling players were standing on centre court as they pulled down the skin around their eyes to make them appear slanted.

A sketch of a Chinese dragon was drawn across the floor.

Among the members of the team was LA Lakers forward-center Pau Gasol and his brother Marc Gasol, a centre with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Britain's Daily Telegraph says: "Spanish sport's poor reputation for insensitivity towards racial issues has been further harmed by the advert."

The Daily Mirror, also of Britain, says the "ad was unlikely to go down well with Olympics hosts China, and could well spoil Spain's hopes of hosting the Olympic Games in Madrid in 2016 or 2020."

--- as reported by SBS (the # from which the aussie guy with the drug case is from) news on 13th August.

i thought it was quite funny actually. i don't know why they are making such a big fuss about it. looking at that picture, i really think they were doing it in good joy. it doesn't hint any disrespect really. what's wrong with having slit-eyes anyway? the chinese people are not saying anything so why is the British media making it an issue. There is no reason for anybody to be "sensitive" to people with slit-eyes. it is not a deficit. who then are the ones being racist here? those who pose with slit-eyes or those who imply that it is a deficit to be sensitive about?

(psst... Jaz.. Priya... doesn't this remind you of some other photo we're more familiar with? shhh... =p)

snowtime!

snow fell on my balcony last night. it's the first time i've seen it snow here (away from the mountains). it started off as a light drizzle of snow but enough to get me all hyped up.

everybody started running to the balcony to lean over and catch some snowflakes. but that did not satisfy us for long so we decided to go downstairs to experience the full shower of snow. when we opened our door to head downstairs, it started pouring snow. it's the heaviest snowfall i've seen in Tassie. really awesome!

when we got downstairs, we jumped about like crazy kids. i injured my foot when i slipped and fell earlier in the day but that too did not hold me back. the snowfall made me forget all the pain in the foot. it was only when i got back home that i felt the effects of all that jumping about.

the whole night i kept going to my balcony every few minutes to check if it's snowing again. the snow-antipation-syndrome is still not going away. it's pouring outside right now and i keep turning to look out the window every couple of minutes to see whether or not the rain's turned to snow.

very exciting! here's some unglam pics of me and my housemates downstairs in the snow.
